Kyiv and Moscow traded blame Sunday for a strike on a school in a Ukrainian-occupied town in Russia's Kursk region after Washington urged compromises for peace.

The Ukrainian army said four people were killed and dozens - many of them elderly - were injured in the town of Sudzha in the Kursk region, which has been under Ukrainian control for five months. More than 80 people are reported to have been rescued from the building.

"At the time of the attack, dozens of local residents were inside the building preparing to evacuate," Ukraine's military said on Feb. 1, adding that nearly 95 people could be trapped under the rubble.
