Missourians approved Proposition A, which raised the minimum wage and mandated paid sick leave, with 57% of the vote. The legislation passed by the Missouri House entirely repeals the mandated sick leave portion.

Missouri’s voter-approved paid sick leave requirements and a minimum wage increase are another step closer to being thrown off course. The state House of Representatives has passed a bill that would get rid of the sick leave mandate and delay the $15 per hour minimum wage increase to 2028.

On Wednesday, the state Supreme Court Court heard arguments in a lawsuit seeking to strike down Proposition A, which guarantees sick leave for hundreds of thousands of workers and gradually hikes the minimum wage to $15. A day earlier, the Missouri House gave initial approval to a bill repealing the sick leave law and modifying the minimum wage.

Missouri voters approved Proposition A by a martin of 15% and more than 445,000 votes. But business groups argue that the ballot measure violates state law.

Does Proposition A violate the Missouri Constitution? That’s what the State Supreme Court is now weighing. The voter-passed initiative will raise Missouri’s minimum wage to $15 an hour next year and requires employers to provide one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked.

The Supreme Court of Missouri will listen to oral arguments after organizations filed a lawsuit calling for the invalidation of Proposition A.
