The Liberal government has spent years touting its efforts to make tech giants pay. Now, those pieces of legislation could be a target of the Trump administration — particularly the digital services tax that requires large tech companies to make a hefty retroactive payment in June.
The new prices for Netflix take effect immediately for new subscribers, while existing members will see the change on their next bill.
Flexing its pricing power, the company is rolling out price increases on several of its plans and in a handful of markets.
Netflix will also try to stop password sharing. Subscribers can add extra members to their accounts for a fee that is less than a new subscription. Adding someone to a standard ad-free plan will increase to $8.99, while the charge for extra members on a plan with commercials will remain the same.
In Q4 2024, Netflix gained more subscribers than it ever has in a single quarter, buoyed by live sporting events and a new season of one of its most popular series, Squid Game. The streaming platform added 18.91 million subscribers for a total of 301.63 million. Netflix has said it will not report quarterly subscriber numbers in future reports.
