WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Agency for International Development workers, some in tears, carted away belongings from a final visit to their now-closed headquarters Thursday as the Trump administration’s rapid-fire dismantling of the congressionally authorized agency moved into its final stages.
The latest USAID directive comes as 1,600 workers received termination notices over the weekend and thousands more abroad were put on administrative leave.
Weeks ago, the Trump administration made waves by pausing the United States Agency for International Development’s assistance programs, and it’s not done yet.
The groups that sued insist the court’s ruling ought to force the Trump administration to restore all funding delivered via U.S.A.I.D. But the administration says it has the power to decimate the agency.
The high court is considering whether to vacate a lower court order requiring the U.S. Agency for International Development to pay $2 billion in foreign assistance invoices, grants and loans halted by the Trump administration.
