The Aga Khan IV has been laid to rest in Egypt in a private ceremony. The governor of Aswan welcomed Prince Karim’s family at the southern Egyptian’s provinces airport ahead of the burial service on Sunday.

Aswan also holds a historical significance for the Aga Khan family as it pays homage to the Fatimid dynasty, from which the Ismaili Imams trace their lineage. With the burial of Aga Khan IV in Aswan, Egypt now holds the mausoleums of two Ismaili spiritual leaders.

Hussaini, the Aga Khan IV and 49th Imam of Nizari Ismaili Muslims, died February 4. He was 88. The Aga Khan’s eldest son, Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini, has been designated the Aga Khan V.
