U.S. President Donald Trump said he wanted to cut the federal funding of colleges that allow what he called "illegal protests" in a social media post that civil rights groups called an attack on the freedoms of speech and assembly.

The legislation comes as President Donald Trump has vowed to cut federal funding from schools that allow “illegal protests."

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he would withhold federal funds from schools, colleges and universities that allowed what he called illegal protests. “Agitators will be imprisoned/ or permanently sent back to the country from which they came,” Trump said in a social media post.

Trump says any school that "allows illegal protests" will lose federal funds, as his administration launches a review of Columbia University.

"All Federal Funding will STOP for any College, School, or University that allows illegal protests,” Trump wrote. "American students will be permanently expelled, or, depending on the crime, arrested. NO MASKS! Thank you for your attention to this matter."
