U.S. District Judge Joseph Laplante agreed to grant a preliminary injunction sought by immigrant-rights groups.

A federal judge in New Hampshire has issued an immediate injunction blocking President Donald Trump’s effort to restrict birthright citizenship, the latest to do so as challenges are heard across the country.

A federal judge who just blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship for the children of people in the U.S. illegally says he's not persuaded by the Trump administration's arguments.

Joseph N. Laplante, chief judge for the federal district court in New Hampshire, said he was not persuaded by arguments an attorney for the US Department of Justice presented in defense of Trump’s order.

Judge Joseph Laplante is the third federal judge to block the order, as more than half a dozen legal challenges against it move forward.

The judge in New Hampshire said an injunction would be issued immediately, with an explanation of his reasoning to follow on Tuesday.
