2008 Subaru Forester Revving With Clutch In - Edmunds
The idle of my 2008 Forester oscillates (between 1000 and 2000 RPM) indefinitely when I push in the clutch with the transmission still in gear. As soon as I take the car out of gear, the idle drops back to normal.
Subaru Forester Speed Control/RPM Surge Problems
Thanks, Brian. I believe that the problem began in 2006, but I am not certain. There are several complaints about it on this site under "Subaru Forester Engine Issues". In particular, gman67's post titled "high idle". There are also references to the problem on Google's "alt.autos.subaru" news group, under the posting "surging Forester".

Subaru Forester Electrical/Lighting Issues - Page 2 - Edmunds
I’ve had some strange electrical problems with my 2004 Subaru Forester STX starting about 2 years ago maybe longer if I think about it. The first issue that I can remember was the passenger side fog lamp went out at about 35K miles. I replaced it. Then I noticed that the passenger side head lamp (not the day time light) was spotty.

The back seat also feels appreciably wider (even though the Forester's back seat is actually wider according to specs), and there is considerably more "real world" carrying room in the cargo area. As far as driving characteristics go, yes, the Forester is a pretty noisy vehicle, especially at 65+ highway speeds.

2009 Forester engine ping "They all do that" - Edmunds
Subaru's senior engine tech in Australia visited and replaced the ECU (which was remapped a little) but said that the single biggest cause of engine problems was poor fueling. He recommended Shell Optimax and I was surprised at improvement in performance, removal of bad engine issues and most of all by 10-15% fuel economy improvement.
