Backwater Reservoir is a reservoir in north west Angus, Scotland. The reservoir's sole purpose is to provide drinking water, and as such, it supplies Angus, Dundee, and parts of Perth and Kinross.

Opened in 1969, Backwater Reservoir links with Lintrathen Reservoir, 2½ miles (4 km) to the south, and supplies water to almost 300,000 people in Dundee, the towns of Angus as well as Coupar Angus, Blairgowrie and the Carse of Gowrie.

The dam is 800 metres long and it holds back 25 million cubic metres of water in a man-made loch stretching over three kilometres (about two miles) in length. A backwater is a part of a river in which there is little or no current. It can refer to a branch of a main river, which lies alongside it and then rejoins it, or to a body of water in a main river, backed up by the sea tide or by an obstruction such as a dam. [1]

The dam is 800 metres long and it holds back 25 million cubic metres of water in a man-made loch stretching over three kilometres (about 2 miles) in length, taking in the old farm of MacRitch. This beautiful stretch of open water is a haven for wildlife and is such a tranquil, restorative place.

Follow the road/track up the west side of the water and onwards through farmland up to The Barny. Then follow the farm track back past Glen Damff Farm and Glenhead Farm then follow the minor road back towards the reservoir and back to the car park. Park at the south end of the loch where there is a free public car park and information board.

Enjoy a circular walk around this reservoir in Glen Isla, north west Angus. For the past 30 years, the Backwater Reservoir has supplied the residents of Angus with their water. This walk takes you around the reservoir and includes two climbs to hills overlooking the water.
