Inward from the flow front, the flow usually contains an upper rubbly flow top, and a lower massive part of viscous lava insulated from the overlying rubble. The jagged cinder blocks that break off the front are then overridden by the massive lava core of the flow which pushes forward.

Hole-in-the-Wall is encircled by jagged basalt flows. The Wilderness is located within the El Malpais National Conservation Area. The West Malpais Wilderness is a flat landscape of 18,000 year old volcanic lava flows. The southeastern portion of the wilderness is a grassland with expansive views.

The lava oozed from the nearby Chyulu Hills, covering the land in a vast field of black, jagged basalt rock. Unlike explosive volcanoes that produce steep mountains, the lava here spread slowly across the landscape, creating a sprawling lava field that can still be seen today.
