Alcoa of Australia’s Managing Director Alan Cransberg and Loy Yang Power’s Chief Executive Ian Nethercote agreed today’s announcement is a landmark for the future of both companies as well as for the Victorian and Australian economies.

The Loy Yang Power Station is a black coal-fired thermal power station located on the outskirts of the city of Traralgon, in south-eastern Victoria, Australia. It consists of two sections, known as Loy Yang A (4 units) and Loy Yang B (2 units). Both Loy Yang A and B are supplied by the Loy Yang brown coal mine.

With a maximum capacity of 1200MW, Loy Yang B is the third largest thermal power station in Victoria, satisfying around 20% of the state's electricity requirements. Operating since 1993, Loy Yang B has shown great longevity, with an estimated technical life up until 2047 or beyond.
