Bhutan's multiple New Year celebrations reflect the country's rich cultural tapestry and geographic diversity. From the nationwide celebration of Losar to the regional Lomba and Nyilo festivities, each of these unique New Years events offers a unique glimpse into Bhutanese traditions, spirituality, and communal practices.

Jan 26, 2020 · Lomba is observed as the New Year by communities of Haa and Paro district valleys in Western Bhutan. It falls on the 29th day of the 9th lunar month in the Bhutanese calendar. The locals will celebrate Lomba for at least five days.

The Losar New Year celebration begins with “Nyi Shu Gu” (Losar New Year’s Eve) and continues, in some parts of Bhutan, for two full weeks. The first three days of the New Year, however, have the biggest celebrations.

Chumphu Nye is located on a secluded hilltop, detached from civilization. It is located at an elevation of 2800-2900 meters. The total walking distance is approximately 14 km and takes around 4 to 5 hours to reach the monastery depending on your walking pace. The hike will begin at the ‘Zee Go’ opening gate formed by two standing rocks.

On the way to Mongar Aja Ney. The renowned Aja Ney is located at an altitude of more than 3,500 meters under Sherimuhung Gewog. The most sacred are the 100 imprints of the sacred syllable “Aa” on the rock-cave left by Guru Rinpoche besides numerous other sacred sites.

Nyilo (Dzongkha: ཉི་ལོག་; Wylie: nyi log; "return of the sun"; also known as Nyinlog) is a traditional new year of the Shar and Wang region of western Bhutan celebrated annually. [1] It falls in the 11th month of the Bhutanese calendar, which corresponds to early January. [2]
