Daniel Matthews is one of the secondary protagonists of Saw II. After being abducted, he and seven other victims are forced to participate in a deadly game set up by John Kramer, aka Jigsaw. However, the killer's primary target is Daniel's father, Detective Eric Matthews.

Daniel Henry Matthews is the son of corrupt detective Eric Matthews, and one of the two surviving test subjects in the Nerve Gas House in Saw II. Daniel is depicted as a juvenile delinquent, who acts out due to his parents recent split. While visiting his father, Daniel is arrested for petty theft.

During his father's test, John reveals their affiliation to Matthews, who was a corrupt police officer who framed his suspects in various crimes. Xavier returns to the safe room and finds a number on the back of Gus's neck. After realizing the numbers are the combination for the safe, he kills Jonas and begins hunting the others.

Daniel lambastes his father, telling him he’s a better cop than he is a dad. We learn that Eric is a crooked cop who has frequently planted evidence on suspects to convict them and, according to Jigsaw, has gunned down innocent victims.

In the Saw franchise, Eric Matthews, played by Donnie Wahlberg, is a central figure in Saw II, III, and IV. As a homicide detective, he faces trials for his misconduct, including police brutality and falsifying evidence leading to false arrests.
