The posse comitatus (from the Latin for "power of the county"), frequently shortened to posse, is in common law a group of people mobilized to suppress lawlessness, defend the people, or otherwise protect the place, property, and public welfare.

Jul 17, 2024 · The Flathead County Sheriff’s Posse was established in 1946 and serves the community under command structure of the Flathead County Sheriff. We serve the public by providing supplemental auxiliary law enforcement services in a way that both develops and inspires community service.

Sheriffs and marshals often deputized ranchers, farmers, cowboys, and townspeople to help enforce the law and hunt down and capture criminals and escapees. Qualifications for these early-day Posse members required little more than the ability to shoot straight, ride a horse, follow a trail, and survive for long periods of time in the field.

The Butte County Sheriff's Posse is located in Northern California. Our history extends back more than 50 years in our community. As a non-profit organization, we strive to be an integral part of the community and provide activities and services related to our deep western heritage.

Mar 10, 2016 · The TCSO Posse is an equestrian riding club affiliated with the Sheriff’s Office. Founded in 1958 by Sheriff Harlan Wright, the posse represents the Sheriff’s Office at ceremonial events, parades and community functions.

The posse is utilized in many different functions including: search and rescue, escort service for dignitaries, public relations and security at special events in or outside of Dallas County -- all at the direction of the Dallas County Sheriff.
