USS Monitor was an ironclad warship built for the United States Navy during the American Civil War and completed in early 1862, the first such ship commissioned by the Navy.

The USS Monitor was an ‘ironclad’ steam ship which famously saw service in the Civil War in the early 1860s. The ship's engine was designed by John Ericsson as a "vibrating side-lever engine." He had created similar engines before and decided to use the design again because of its advantage for a small, low-riding warship.

Jul 3, 2024 · USS Monitor’s steam engine room represents the earliest and most complete steamship engine room ever archaeologically raised. This includes John Ericsson’s 20-ton vibrating side-lever-trunked dual steam engine, used to propel the ironclad.

The Monitor's unique "vibrating side-lever" engine design allowed the engine to be mounted under water - out of the line of direct enemy fire. The engine, along with its register that tracked the number of hours logged on the engine, were recovered in 2001.

The primary objectives for Monitor 2001 were: to prepare the Monitor’s unique steam engine for recovery; recover the steam engine; adjust the armor belt support; make significant progress towards uncovering the turret; and recover other artifacts in the immediate area as requested by the onsite NOAA representative.

You may know that the only full size engine like this that exists is the one recovered from the ship wreck site in 2001 and is being restored at the Mariners Museum in Newport News Virginia USA.

This model is a one-of-a-kind scale replica of the Monitors steam engine. Every part has been precisely scaled by studying the few badly faded working drawings, through extensive research of 20 years and re-creating the engine components in CAD drawings.
