One Hundred Ghost Stories (Japanese: 百物語, romanized: Hyaku monogatari) is a series of ukiyo-e woodblock prints made by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) in the Yūrei-zu genre circa 1830. He created this series around the same time he was creating his most famous works, the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series.

Ukiyo-e was central to forming the West's perception of Japanese art in the late 19th century, particularly the landscapes of Hokusai and Hiroshige.

Toriyama Sekien (鳥山 石燕, 1712 – September 22, 1788), real name Sano Toyofusa, was a scholar, kyōka poet, and ukiyo-e artist of Japanese folklore.

No longer inspiring fear or awe, these creatures were used by ukiyo-e period artists in forms of parody as well as humorous and even sexual ways. This de-mystification of yokai that came during the Edo Period stemmed from a variety of different sources.

Hyakumonogatari was the traditional way of a gathering to speak and hear ghost stories. As the title represents, he and the publisher would have intended to produce a hundred Japanese ukiyo-es of ghosts, but we can see only five. Yokai and yurei are two categories given to these otherworldly visitors, and may include demons, ghosts and many other types of magical apparitions. Ghosts play leading roles in many kabuki dramas, and the ukiyo-e artists drew heavily from this wellspring of exciting characters.
